For this week’s reading, I have read the short story “Aye, and Gomorrah” by Samuel R. Delany. This narrative ties into the subject of the fiction of ideas, which was discussed in class this week. The discussions had made me think speculatively; such as alternate universes and other mind experiments. Today, I will be exploring how the ideas, particularly in Science Fiction stories, makes “What-If” scenarios and psychological implications that could happen in our world.
The short story “Aye, and Gomorrah” portrays a universe similar to our society, but with the addition of a new sexual orientation: Spacers. Spacers are humans that are gender neutered, and cannot have any sexual interaction with others. As a result, they became the “minority” of society. Delany was trying to implicate in the story how homosexuality was not widely accepted by comparing it with the Spacers. Although homosexuality was accepted in this universe, there was another subculture that was disregarded to which was the frelks.
These two groups of people in the story has made a very controversial act in their society which is made to impact the reader about their own world. Personally, I had gotten the intention to not discriminate based on sexual orientation, but in general. The author had made readers dive into the shoes of the Spacer: how they felt isolated and discriminated by other people. The frelks gave a sense of hope to them. They actually accepted who they were, and admired them for that.
